Iris Kensmil is an Amsterdam-based visual artist with a Surinamese background. She is known for her installations, paintings, and drawings in her vivid style. She marks the history of how black movements and black intellectuals, writers, musicians, artists, and activists have increasingly influenced the shaping of our future. Iris Kensmil creates a visual construction of "Black Modernity" following her drive to work on a future history that includes herself too, The style and quality of her work invite the viewer to share her perspective.
Kensmil studied Fine Arts at the Minerva Academy in Groningen (1992–1996). From 2014 till 2018, she was a member of the Jury for the Dutch Royal Award for Modern Painting. Furthermore, Iris also represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennial 2019 with Remy Jungerman.
